This was my first early morning run, before work, for ages, probably close to a year. The alarm was set for 4.30 am and 16 minutes later I started the stop-watch on the Garmin. It seemed to take forever to get out of the house. Maybe it’s because I was trying to be quiet but not really doing a very good job of it.

I would have preferred to run a little further than 8 k’s but I was time restricted, there is a train to catch at 6.50 am and I definitely must have breakfast before leaving.

I recall from my previous early morning runs, it’s very hard for me to get a decent pace going and hence my heart rate is on the low side (graphs clearly indicate this) It wasn’t until about the 6 km mark that I started feeling stronger and then wished if only I could have run further.

Overall though I’m relatively happy with the run, nothing came out of left-field and I ran it fairly easily. The most difficult part is actually getting up, once up I was raring to go.

The back pain I was experiencing late last week has gone. I’ve now incorporated back stretching routines.

Ok, I know, I shouldn’t have been out running 20 odd k’s so late in the day. I really should have run it earlier on, much earlier.

I was going alright until I hit the 16 km point and then it (something) hit me. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to work out that it was the temperature 28 deg Celsius plus humidity around 65% that eventually got to me. At this point I decided it was probably wiser to walk a little and conserve some energy. Thank god I took my fuel belt loaded with heaps of Gatorade; I certainly used it.

One of the Garmin features I hadn’t yet set was a time reminder. I set it up to alert me every 20 mins and upon this alert down with half a bottle (about 100 ml) of Gatorade. Towards the end of the run, especially when walking and just after, the 20 minute rule went out the window.

As you can see, I’m fiddling with the style of how I set this blog out. I’m thinking I might as well just chuck all the graphs and charts at the end, contained in a table. Oh well, I see how it goes.

Humid day all day today and thundery this afternoon. About 5 pm the heavy rain had subsided and so decided to head out for an hours run at a relaxed pace. Well that was the intent but as per usual during the run I went with the "how I feel approach" and just upped the ante a little bit. My back is still aching a little, well a lot, it's more noticeable when I'm sitting. Stu Mac thanks for your advice and I'll give it a go, basically more stretching and in a particular order. Took a day off work today (ATO) as I had to hang around this morning at home waiting for an Optus technician to attend and fix the internet connection.  

I was going to run about mid afternoon and that all went out the window when the storms arrived.   About 5 pm the weather had cleared somewhat and I guessed it would hold off for at least 30 mins and so I headed out for a run.   I didn't really feel like a longish run today so elected for a quick, strong, fast 8 k's.   I powered out for the first 5 k's and then eased off a little for the 6th k (I was getting tired).   For the remaining 2 k's I picked up the pace again.   All in all I'm quite happy with today's smash and grab effort.  

Weather wise, as you can imagine it was very muggy.   It was in the low 20's but the humidity was extremely high and clearly noticeable.   After the run it seemed to take ages for me to stop sweating.

I've noticed today I've got a niggling pain in the middle of my back.   I think it started yesterday, maybe the day before and I really can't put a finger on it as to what caused it.   The last couple of months I've been more concerted in my stretching before and after most runs.   As an aside I can nearly touch my toes (about 2 cm off - it was more like 6 or 7 cm two months ago).   I'm wondering has the stretching caused a little problem in my back, maybe it's the sit-ups after every run or could it be the running itself.   All I know right now is that I wish I had a rack and just let the misses stretch me out. 

By the way, when I eventually touch my toes I'll make that a milestone.

Another nice day for a run, well probably a little on the hot side.   Yeah I know, I should have got up super early and run when it's not as hot.   Well anyway I was able to get a run in from work mid-morning, so I did.   I knew I wouldn't be running later in the day because of the heat so I thought I'd at least get 40 odd minutes in.

Tracked along the Yarra again and again as per the last few runs along there, a carnival type atmosphere, especially today being Australia Day.   Australian Open Tennis crowds everywhere and preparations were under way along Flinders St for an Australia Day march.

I've come to accept that The Tan and Fawkner Park are not Mr. Garmin (301) friendly.   Just simply too much tree coverage.   Uploading the data file to SportsTracks I have the ability to correct the errors but I'd rather not have to do that.   I'm not including a splits chart today because the split figures are all up ..... creek.

Yes, I was working today, out there protecting Victoria.   My wife laughs when I put it like that.   She reckons 'get a real job'.

Another little milestone clicked over today.   Since 2001 I've now clocked up 8000 km and I reckon I'll crack the 10,000 mark later this year.

Nice day for a run.   Ran at a comfortable pace, felt good.   Weather wise, it was warm at 28 deg Celsius, but for some reason this was not a factor today.

Again ran through the crowds from the Australian Open Tennis.   Didn't see anybody famous.

Garmin Forerunner 301

I received this comment in relation to yesterday's (23-1-06) blog. A Girl Running said...

Steve, we are thinking of buying the forerunner 301 tomorrow. Can you let me know if you have time, if it's easy to work and do you find it fairly accurate? Would you buy it again or try something else? thanks so much

Response I purchased my 301 in September 2005 and have used it for every run since. It is relatively easy to work out and the buttons are clearly labelled and relatively big (compared to traditional buttons on normal watches). The display is on the large side, a plus, in my book. The device itself is large and some refer to it as a briefcase. After a few runs the size of the device is not an issue, it's something you get use to. Is it accurate? Well, it gets very close to being accurate. If all your runs are under heavy/thick tree coverage then the GPS signal will either be weak or lost. If you are running a straight line and lose the signal and eventually pick up the signal 2, 3 or 5 mins later the distance recorded will be correct, it's simply a straight line calculation for the device. That is not the case if you have turned a corner. The straight line calculation will cut the corner (be a lesser distance). The above also applies to running next to tall buildings. I wouldn't even bother running through Melbourne CBD and expect the device to receive GPS signals. Apparently the problem is due to the fact that the aerial of the device is on the underside and not facing skyward. The new 305 unit addresses this problem. In relation to the HRM side of things I had some dramas with the 301 not receiving heart rate information. Prior to the 301 I used a Polar S610 HRM (it's still my day to day watch) and used that since 2001. I never experienced any HRM problems with the Polar. Over the last few weeks I've not had any problems with the HRM. The things I changed to address the problem:-
  • Tightened the chest strap (tighter than when wearing my Polar HRM)
  • Now use conductive gel
Comparing the Polar chest strap to the 301, the Polar contact point(s) are flush (flat - no grooves). The 301 is not flush, has grooves. I believe for this reason maybe the flush contact plate of the Polar means it doesn't have to be worn as tight (should be snug) as the 301. As far as GPS devices go I can only compare the 301 to the Timex GPS watch. My brother owns a Timex GPS watch and I trialled it once before purchasing the 301. I discounted the Timex unit simply because it was in too many parts, a watch, GPS receiver and data recorder. Returning to the accuracy issue of GPS readings, these can be addressed by free software (www.motionbased.com and SportsTracks). I use both. I find SportsTracks to be a very useful piece of software. It has heaps of features, one of them being the ability to easily fix erronous GPS points simply by dragging the line back to where it should be over a Google Earth image. Would I buy it again? Yes. If I was in the market now I probably would be considering the 305 an updated unit. With the introduction of the 305 one would expect the price of the 301 to drop. I hope the above helps.

Well it was certainly cooler than yesterday. I wasn't taking any chances today and decided to wear my fuel belt loaded with Gatorade. It was a planned 14 km run so it was always going to be over an hour running. Ran a decent pace today considering such a hard slog yesterday. What a night, temperature wise, it didn't get below 25 deg Celsius and the forecast max for the day was 43 deg Celsius. The last few days leading up to today there were discussions on the Cool Running Message Boards that due to the hot temperatures the start should be 6 and not 8 am. Eventually we split the difference and agreed with a 7 am start. I'm not really a morning person but on hindsight the earlier start was ideal, well as ideal as you can be during a heat wave. (photo L-R Slowaz, J-Mac & Morley) Five Cool Runners had committed to running today, Morley, Slowaz, J-Mac, MikeyMelb and me. I'm the Englishman in the group and I'm not sure if the others are Englishmen or Mad Dogs. The only slight variation to the song is that we're not running at midday. I arrived just on 7, Slowaz, Morley and J-Mac already into stretching routines. Opening the car door the heat hit me, of course I had the air-conditioner on for the trip there. We waited a short while for MikeyMelb as we knew this was his first run with the group. If we headed off without him at 7 and he was only a few minutes late he would not have known which track to take to at least try and catch up; so we waited until 7.15 am. No show from MickeyMelb and so we were off. We ran as a group and tracked along the same track to the trail along the banks of the Maribrynong River. Morley was looking good with his new fuel belt (xmas pressie), Slowaz was carrying a water bottle in hand and J-Mac oh J-Mac, J-Mac where was your water bottle. I was carrying my fuel belt loaded with four small bottles of water and home-made energy gel. There are only a couple of water stops along the way, one near the start (in the reserve) and the other at Canning Street (23 km run - turnaround point). The point is, between the water stops there's about 10 k's where water isn't available. We all arrived at the 10.5 km turnaround point (8 km marker on track) together. Slowaz decided to stay put, Morley continued a little bit further, he said to the fence but I couldn't work out to which fence he was referring. I thought J-Mac was also running with Morley to the fence. I decided to continue on to Canning Street Reserve and during this section I paced out at 4:30 /km. Well I had to quicken the pace as the intention was to re-group with the others on the return leg. I took in some energy gel and water and then J-Mac arrived and we headed back and met up with Slowaz and Morley. On the return we broke into two groups, J-Mac & me and Slowaz & Morley. About the 16 or 17 km point J-Mac elected to walk the next km so I continued on. Did I mention it was hot, it was bloody hot and seemed to take forever to reach the reserve which is just prior to the 2 km ascent. During the ascent, again it seemed to take forever to finally sight the end and finish. On finishing I waited for the others and they turned up about 10 minutes later or thereabouts. Whilst waiting I couldn't believe it others were heading off for their runs. At this point it was about 31 deg Celsius and rising. During the run I did notice a rubbing on my chest which really didn't concern me at the time. I thought it was the HRM chest strap. I was wearing a white shirt and I noticed from the reflection of the car window two blood stains around the nipples. Update on MikeyMelb This was posted by MikeyMelb on Cool Running Message Boards on Monday (day after run) guys, sorry for not meeting up with you on sunday morning, unfortunately, I would have more than anything, loved to have been there. Because it means I would not have been layed up in a hospital bed, felt strange and bad all friday evening and saturday morning, when I headed out for my long weekend bike ride only to be re-directed back home to the hospital and diagnosed with "atrial fribulation" causing an "irregular heartbeat". got home this afternoon, and being all cleared from a heart ultrasound. Im happy i'm ok, but just depressed of another stumbling block, not sure when I will be out for a run next. Mikey Get well soon Mikey.

Again, not sleeping well, body still trying to adjust to so-called normal workday routine.   About 2 pm it was an effort to keep my eyes open.   At this time I was in a meeting and I'm sure some of the other's noticed my eye lids closed for longer than normal.  

First run this year from work, after work at 4 pm starting from Fawkner Park.   I took in the Yarra River running past the crowds leaving from and/or going to the Australian Tennis Open..   All up a nice easy 15 km distance.

For various reasons I couldn't get out this morning for a longish run so I thought I'd at least get a run in. It was basically a ho-hum type run and then at the 10 k mark I decided to put a quick one in. As it turned out that particular split came in at 3:48 so I'm happy with that. No Garmin HRM problems. Sat 14 Jan 2006 - Another Rest Day

No run today as other things got in the way. One of the other things that got in the way was my Roland HP136 Piano. I've decided to continue piano lessons but this time I'll do a self study course utilising computer software. Well, my piano has midi capabilities but could not get it hooked up to the computer properly. Half the day and all night Phil (brother) and I were stuffing around with it. Eventually hooked up the piano to Phil's computer and presto, it worked. This at least identified that the problem was not with the piano. Whilst at Phil's we then watched (midnight) the Manchester derby (City v United) on Fox Sports. City won 3-1. What has the above got to do with training and running, absolutely nothing. I thought I'd write about it anyway.

Fri 13 Jan 2006 - Clocked a 1000 visitors

It seems like only yesterday when I started blogging my training. Overnight my blog clocked 1000 visitors and as I write this it's at 1035. Thank you everybody for dropping by, reading what I've written (at times nonsence maybe) and leaving comments. Thanks also to those that simply have a quick glance without leaving comments. I experimented with a free guest book service which is a bit light on at the moment (hint, hint - relo's overseas). Even though that doesn't get much input I'll keep going anyway.

Fri 13 Jan 2006 - No Energy - No Run

I've listened to my body today and decided to make it a rest day from training. I've lacked energy all day and I think it started after yesterday's You Yangs run. Last night I had hot flushes in my face, a weird sensation. Another way to describe it, I suppose, is a tingly sensation, a tad light headed, as if blood wasn't circulating properly. I was at my brothers place later on, about 8.30 pm and described it to him. He thought that it's probably a form of heat exhaustion after my run. Maybe he's right in a sense or maybe yesterday's run was just the straw that broke the camel's back since I've been doing a heap of k's through December until now.

Fri 13 Jan 2006 - Another weight milestone - 75.4 kg

Checked my weight this morning and have finally cracked it into the 75 kg bracket. Haven't been there for, well I don't know, ages. Actual reading was 75.4 kg. And here's a little graph, that from my perspective looks good. To put this weight into perspective, I'm 176 cm (5' 9" and a bit) tall which apparently means my BMI is 24.3. Not bad for a 45, nearly 46, year old.

I intended to run this run a little earlier in the day, around 11 or 12 noon. That was all stuffed up as my cable internet connection was playing up and Optus said a technician would be out between noon and 4.30 pm, this was all arranged this morning. Internet connection fixed (or I think it was/is) and decided to run the You Yangs after all and got there just before 4 pm. This is my third run around the You Yangs. Ran around Great Circle Drive in a clockwise direction. I suppose the graphs and charts explain everything. Stats as of 12 Jan 2006

Nice and easy night run. Temperature just right with a dash of rain and I'm not complaining. Garmin HRM, again no spikes, mis-readings (that I'm aware of) or drop-outs. The chest strap didn't rub tonight but that could be for one of two reasons. Maybe because it wasn't as hot or maybe because I shaved a little chest hair away from the relevant spots. I think the latter. It might not look the best at the moment but then again I don't run the streets with my shirt off like Stu Mac. Tesso suggested using some bodyglide (I assume that's a type of petroleum jelly - Vaseline) but I'm not sure how that mixed with the conductive gel would work. Only time will tell. Post Run 100 Sit-ups
A one-off type running course. My car was at Ultra Tune in Hoppers Crossing with battery/electrical problems. Left it there last night. Got the call in the afternoon that my car was ready to be picked up. As I didn't have any transport available my only option was to walk. So I decided to incorporate my daily run into this process. Weather wise it didn't feel hotter than yesterday's run but apparently it was 7 degrees hotter. I'm glad I ran when I did because as I finished and picking up my car the northerly wind picked up and in the distance a dust storm was brewing coupled with a bit of rain. Garmin HRM chest strap is now starting to rub, most likely due to wearing it very tight. Must wear it tight in order to get decent readings and no dropouts or mis-readings. Stats as of 9 Jan 2006

Post Run 100 Sit-ups
A good solid 24.5 km run today. As on Friday I decided to mix things up a bit today. I decided to run a route I've never run before and the only plan was the distance being around the 16 or 20 km mark. I really was making things up as I went along. I suppose running solo makes this possible. Okay, okay, I know, I should have probably run this run earlier in the day but with one thing and another that wasn't possible. It was a warmish day and therefore decided to wear my fuel belt and loaded it with 4 bottles (800 ml all up) of Gatorade and stashed some dried apricots in a spare pocket. My re-hydration plan was simple, every 20 mins drink half a bottle (about 100 ml). The plan worked or I think it did. From about the 20 km point onwards I was stuffed, the heat got to me and simply slowed down. The Garmin unit as regards the HRM did not miss a beat today. I think I've finally worked it out why it was playing up. Basically, I wasn't wearing the chest strap tight enough, that's all it was. Stats as of 8 Jan 2006

Sat 7 Jan 2006 - Impromptu Fitness Test

I'm all alone at home this week. Cherie's gone (left yesterday) to the holiday house (Seaspray on Ninety Mile Beach, Vic) for a girls weekend/week and the kids come and go (more go than come). I've just sold my bike and as luck would have it my car is playing up and out of action. I'm sort of stranded a little bit. As the car is out of action I walked to Philip's (brother) house which took me about 18.5 mins. Half way through the walk a light bulb went on and I thought why not make this walk a start of a fitness or heart rate test. On arriving at Philip's I checked my heart rate. No gadgets, just the old fingers at the wrist method checking the number of beats over 15 seconds. I'm quite happy with 76 bpm and after about 4 mins it was down to 60 bpm. The 4 min gap is just an estimate and during that gap I was gas-bagging and moving so not the best way to get a lowest rate possible. Hey, it's just an indication, at least after 4 mins or so it was heading in the right direction. In a month or two I might do another 18 min walk at the same pace and compare readings. Weight My weight is holding steady at 76.0 kg.

Today I really didn't feel like running and at the last minute I decided I would but on this occasion I'll run somewhere not knowing in advance where the streets and creeks would take me. In a way this would make the run a little more interesting and at the same time I was only contemplating an easy paced (about 5:00 /km) run. I had a rough idea that I'd be out about 60 minutes, maybe a little longer. Of recent times whist driving home many times along Sayers Rd I've always noticed a paved path which follows Skeleton Creek in a southerly direction. When passing I've always thought, "that's a track I must run along". It actually reminds me of the movie, Fields of Dreams, and the catch phrase, "If you build it they will come". Well the track is built and I'm coming. As an aside in a recent comment a fellow CR (Also Ran - Stephen) mentioned that he runs along Skeleton Creek. Did I say that this was going to be an easy run. Well it started out that way and I ran along familiar streets until I got to Skeleton Creek. At this point the track was all new to me. I didn't know where it ended and yet for some reason I put the pace on and running quite comfortably at 4:30 or better pace. It wasn't an intentional increase in pace it just happened. Well, anyway, I followed Skeleton Creek all the way to Heaths Rd (about a 3 km stretch) and towards the end passed under an old 4 or 5 brick arched bridge. Never knew that was there. Just on reaching Heaths Rd (I knew where I was at this point) I realised that I was running at a decent pace. I couldn't let that stop and consciously kept the pace up all the way home. I'm quite satisfied with a sub 60 mins for a 13.1 km run. I don't do that all the time. Garmin HRM You wouldn't believe it, the bloody thing didn't miss a beat or spike. The only thing that changed from the past few days is that I tightened the chest strap further. Maybe that was the problem all along, the chest strap not making a proper contact - though I thought it was always a snug fit. Stats as of 6 Jan 2006

An uneventful run today, nothing really to write home about. No intent on speed or longer distance. If anything I did consider a rest day, well as you can see, I didn't. Received a phone call while running along Bindowan Ave, about the 9 km mark. Walked as I talked. I've still got my motor bike for sale and arranged to meet the caller (Eddy) at my place at 8 pm to check the bike over. HRM is still playing up. I had a thought whilst running, dangerous I know. Maybe, just maybe, I'm not wearing the strap tight enough and that is why I'm not receiving heart rate signals. I don't think that is the case, but I'll tighten the strap for my next run. Weight Milestone Checked my weight this morning at 76.2 kg. This is the lowest I've recorded since 2001. The highest recorded during this period was 86.8 kg in 2002 and 2003. I have been lighter than 76.2 prior to 2001 but I haven't logged or recorded those figures and needless to say I was younger where metabolism wasn't such a great issue. It is now. Today's run was a forced run and why did I run, I'm not too sure. I sort of wanted to run a little earlier in the day but with being on holidays I got stuck into the garden then decided to fix the pergola. One thing led to another and before I knew, it was 6 pm already. I headed out initially deciding on a 16 km run incorporating the Werribee River. As I got to the Riverband Historical Park (my 12 km course turn-off point) I made an executive decision not to run 16 k's tonight and boy was I glad I made that decision. I was lethargic for the entire run, just didn't feel right and hence the slow pace and lowish heart rates. All in all tonights run was an effort more so than other days when I've run faster and/or longer. In trying to analyse why the 'feel' factor was not there tonight I believe it may be due to the fact of not eating anything since lunch, at noon (2 chicken sandwiches), nearly 7 hours earlier. I was drinking heaps of water. It was not an overly warm day either. During the run it was about 17 degrees C. My HRM is playing up again. There were a number of spikes indicating 224 bpm and at numerous times the Garmin simply not recording the heart rate. Using the software 'SportsTracks' I edited the heart rate data by simply making the spikes (200+ bpm data) the same as the readings either side of the spike, therefore a more realistic and believable figure. This also alters the average heart rate. I suppose I'll just have to live with the fact that the Garmin 301 HRM is not always going to work as it should. Stats as of 3 Jan 2006

Just recently I've been running at night, not by design, it's just worked out that way. It's been quite a while since I've run at night and it does have a different feel about it. Tonights run was just an easy paced run, no intention on any speed type work. This was due to the fact that I had a big dinner (roast beef - who's going to knock that back) about 7 pm. Mr. Garmin is playing up again as regards the heart rate spikes. About four or five occasions it beeped at me claiming a high heart rate of around 224. I'm still using conductive gel and from last week or so when I started using the gel the HRM hasn't missed a beat. Admittedly I haven't cleaned it with a toothbrush since then (first time). After every run I do put the strap under cold water, give it a good rinsing. It looks like it might have to be a weekly ritual, clean heart strap with a toothbrush. Stats as of 2 Jan 2006

Sun 1 Jan 2006 - First run for the year

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday it was stinking hot reaching about 43 degrees C and today it's been overcast and raining. First run for the year and not an early one. Headed out at 8.44 pm to be precise, that's what Mr. Garmin recorded. At this time it was dusk, cool and light misty rain falling. A real change from the last few days. I was even thinking that it was a bit too fresh, wouldn't mind it being a bit warmer. All in all though the conditions were just right. Run stats

I was thinking about extending my run along the Werribee River but thought better of it, as it was getting dark and there's no street lighting down there. My best option was turning off at the Riverband Historical Park and running along the streets to home. Well, that's what I did. Considering I hadn't really ran that many k's this week I felt really refreshed and strong. As the split chart shows, every split was getting faster. Does that mean if I ran a further 10-12 km each split would have been faster - somehow I don't think it works like that. Stats as of 1 Jan 2006
