I've not had any illness (flu and the like) for quite a while now and knew it couldn't last. This morning I woke up with a mild headache (eyestrain behind and directly above left eye). Initially I thought maybe it was dehydration related and tried to analyse my last few days water intake. As far as I can remember I've been drinking heaps of water, maybe not as much as previous weeks, but enough all the same. I held off taking any Panadol and elected to drink heaps of water and even made up a litre of Gatorade during the morning at work. I was half hoping this may help. It didn't. Just after lunch I couldn't take it any more, took some Panadol and about 30 mins later the pain eased somewhat. At this point I felt cold shivers on my back and the nasal thing started. Bloody flu (cold) and all I thought about is how long this is going to hold me up. My experience is that it will last for 4 to 5 days which means most likely I won't be able to run the 'Maroondah Dam Trail' run this Sunday. I've also realised now that my lethargic run on Tuesday (12 km) and not so crash hot run yesterday (12 km) may have been the catalyst for this flu. Having said that, Ross from work had the flu on Wednesday which I may have picked up from him, thanks Ross. Who knows, most likely a combination of both factors. The upshot of all this is that I'm not running tonight and will just have to wait it out.

Oh no, that's not good. Guess you know that rest is the best thing at this stage. What a shame you will miss the Maroondah Dam run.
One of my running mates up here has just come down with something very similar and of course doesn't want to rest so his girlfriend (a much smarter runner!) is threatening to leave him unless he does rest.
Take care.
For the first time this year, I tried taking Zicam (I don't know if it's available where you're at) when I felt some cold symptoms coming on. I kept taking it for the prescribed amount of time and my cold symptoms never really got any worse, which is great considering the fact that I figured I was in for a full-blown cold. I felt back to normal in a day or two. Zicam is a homeopathic medicine that is high in zinc. I may escape having a cold this year. That would be the first time in memory.
Hope you are feeling better soon. Im looking forward to some pics of your regular runs.
Some rest, lots of water and other healthy stuff!
A day or 2 off or worse case the easiest of easy runs, then you will return and be full strength in a few days, but if you work hoard you will hurt weeks & weeks worth of running.
All the best
Get well soon Steve - get into the Garlic and C.
