Second run back after 6 day layoff. Health wise; not really feeling great, still with a little niggling headache. I think I might also be developing a gastro thing. Despite this I decided to go for a run anyway. I more or less had to (well not really) as my car was parked at the Hoppers Crossing Railway Station. Somehow I had to get there and pick it up.
Upon heading out my headache disappeared more or less straight away, which was a relief. It was a very hot at 35 deg with a strong northerly and early in the run I was doing it comfortably. At this point I was thinking about how I would blog this run. I was thinking along the lines of using one of my standard comments, “Another easy [insert number here] k’s”.
I’m not sure about everybody else but when I run I don’t necessarily think about running, I usually think about other things, even fantasise (daydream). Before I know it a few km’s has passed and I’m closer to the finish. This usually occurs when I am running comfortably within myself. Tonight though with about 2-3 km left all of a sudden I was doing it hard, very hard and thoughts turned to “how much longer to go” or “are we there yet”. I realised that this particular run was not going to be “another easy [insert number here] km’s”.
The splits and heart rate graphs clearly show a slower pace and higher heart rate for the last 2-3 km.

All the best to you on your Melborne Marathon training. The Twin Cities Marathon will be my first marathon. I can relate to the "I don't necessarily think about running," comment. Of course I've ended taking a spill or two when I didn't pay enough attention to the landscape in front of me.
Sometimes when I'm doing it tough and thinking 'gees, 3k to go' I try to imagine this is the last time I will be able to run for weeks, or months, so need to make the most of it. Doesn't always work tho ;-)
If i am running a route that I have done alot of times before I generally do it a little tougher. I always make the mistake of thinking about how far I have to go or compare the times at set points from previuos times.
I really enjoy it more running different tracks and distances it keeps me pre-occupied exploring new places.
I am really feeling for you with your headache, I do hope that it goes soon and you can get back to it.
Hey Steve, just to answer your question, I thought I would answer it now otherwise I would probably forget to post it on the blog. I am an Elec Fitter in the Army, have been for over 8 years.
